In 2010, I attended a writer’s retreat in Manitou Springs, Colorado.

On the second day, we had to hand in three things to one of the mentors for critique (they had red pens!):

• Elevator pitch

• Synopsis

• First chapter

I had to distill down the whole concept of the novel …
